French film Welcome gets European Parliament 2009 LUX Prize
As revealed on Wednesday in Strasbourg, this year's European Parliament LUX Film Prize goes to the film "Welcome" by the French director Philippe Lioret. This film won the majority of EP members' votes.
2009 LUX Prize Award Ceremony - 25 November: Which Film will get the EP Film Prize support for 23 languages subtitling and EU-wide distribution?
On Wednesday 25 November the EP President Jerzy Buzek will award the third LUX Prize for the European Cinema. The 87,000 euro prize will finance the subtitling of the winning film in the 23 official EU languages and the producing of a 35 mm print per Member State, making it more accessible to viewers throughout the EU.

For its 2009 LUX Prize Competition, the European Parliament has selected three films: Eastern Plays, Sturm and Welcome. In this context, the EP will host a series of events on Tuesday 10 November in its Brussels premises. Major European film directors and cinema players will discuss the topicality of the contending films and, in partnership with the Goethe Institute, the first -ever DVD edition, with 30 languages on a single disc, of the 2007 LUX Prize winner Auf der anderen Seite.
3-25 November - LUX Prize 2009 Competition starts: Eastern Plays, Sturm and Welcome under the spotlight
The European Parliament (EP) shines the LUX Prize spotlight on three films which go to the very heart of the European public debate: Eastern Plays, Sturm and Welcome. From 3 November, Members of the European are invited to attend daily screenings of the films and decide between them, by mean of electronic voting. Results will remain undisclosed until the Award Ceremony, on 25 November.
Venice, September 11, 2009 - Eastern Plays, Sturm and Welcome Will Compete for the LUX
Today, under the auspices of the 66th Mostra, the European Parliament unveiled the three contending films for the LUX Prize 2009: Eastern Plays (Kamen Kalev), Sturm (Hans-Christian Schmid) and Welcome (Philippe Lioret) will compete for the film prize that has been awarded by the European Parliament to a European co-production for the last two years.
2009 LUX Prize Competition unveiled in Venice, next Friday 11 September.
The three contending films for the 2009 LUX Prize will be announced in a press conference (Palazzo Del Casino -18:00) in presence of senior EP Members, President of La Biennale, previous laureates of the LUX Prize and authors of the films selected for the 2009 competition.

Through the partnership it has sealed this year with the Brussels European Film Festival, the European Parliament today unveils the Official Selection of its film prize — The LUX Prize. Ten films are in the Official Selection, but only three will compete for the LUX Prize 2009. They will be disclosed during the Venice International Film Festival in September. The three competing films will be shown at the European Parliament from 2 to 20 November. A vote will be cast by the 736 Members of the European Parliament to elect the winner, which will then be awarded the LUX Prize 2009 at the European Parliament on 25 November in Strasbourg.
18.03.2009 - The European Parliament Cinema Prize: The Official Selection for the 2009 LUX Prize shall be revealed on 28 May 2009
The jury for the 2009 LUX cinema prize will meet in Brussels on 19 March, then on 30 April and 28 May. It will then announce the ten films making the official selection, and among them, the three films selected to run in the competition. In November, the Members of the European Parliament will vote for one of these three films. The winner of the 2009 LUX Prize will receive funding for subtitling in each of the European Union’s 23 official languages, and a 35-mm copy will be supplied to each Member State.

The film 'Le Silence de Lorna', by the Belgian directors Jean-Pierre and Luc DARDENNE, is the winner of the European Parliament Cinema Prize LUX 2008. EP President, Hans-Gert Pöttering handed over the trophy to Luc Dardennne in a ceremony in front of MEPs and representatives of the three competing films in the final. The aim of the LUX Prize is to facilitate the circulation of European films within Europe.

24.10.2007 - And the LUX Prize for European cinema goes to... "Auf der anderen Seite" ("On the Edge of Heaven")
The Turkish-German co production "On the Edge of Heaven" ("Auf der anderen Seite") won the first edition of the European Parliament LUX (light) Prize for European cinema. The German Actress Hanna Schygulla received the trophy from EP President Hans-Gert Pöttering in front of the Members of the European Parliament, and representatives from the other films in competition. MEPs voted for the winning film from a short-list of three.
