3-25 November - LUX Prize 2009 Competition starts: Eastern Plays, Sturm and Welcome under the spotlight.
The European Parliament (EP) shines the LUX Prize spotlight on three films which go to the very heart of the European public debate: Eastern Plays, Sturm and Welcome. From 3 November, Members of the European are invited to attend daily screenings of the films and decide between them, by mean of electronic voting. Results will remain undisclosed until the Award Ceremony, on 25 November.
2009 LUX Prize Competition
The three films in contention were chosen by a panel of cinema professionals and unveiled in September under the auspices of the 66th Venice Film Festival. Kamen Kalev's Eastern Plays, Hans-Christian Schmid's Sturm and Philippe Lioret's Welcome, allow the EP to present three remarkable contemporary films which invite us as Europeans to reflect on our shared values and recent history.

About the LUX Prize
The LUX Prize (in Latin, lux means light) was established in 2007 as a representation of the support by the European Parliament for the European film industry and its many creative endeavours.
Through the LUX Prize, the European Parliament contributes to the breaking down of language barriers that too often hinder the circulation of films throughout Europe.
The LUX Prize's Stakes: 23 EU languages subtitling & EU-wide distribution
Similar to previous winners Auf der anderen Seite (2007) and Le silence de Lorna (2008), the 2009 LUX Prize winning film will benefit from the financial support of the European Parliament, consisting of:
- subtitling into the 23 official languages of the European Union, as well as an adaptation of the original version for the visually- or hearing-impaired,
- production of a 35-mm print per member state or the support of the subsequent DVD release.
